Past simple digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang sudah berlalu di masa lalu. Pelajari penggalan kalimat berikut:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian musician and composer. He lived from 1756 to 1791. He started composing at the age of life and wrote more than 600 piece of music. He was only 35 years old when he died.

Lived/was/wrote/started/died semuanya adalah past simple (verb 2) .

Pada umumnya past simple diakhiri dengan -ed. (regular verbs).

I work in travel agency now. Before that I worked in a department store.
We invited them into our party, but they decided not to come.
The Police stopped me on my way home last night.
Laura passed her exam, because she studied very hard.

Pola kalimat

Past simple memiliki pola sebagai berikut:
Kalimat positif

I		enjoyed
She		saw
They		went

Kalimat tanya

Did		you		enjoy?
		She		eat?
		They		go?

Kalimat negatif

you		didn't (did not)		enjoy the show
She				eat chilli
They				go to the ceremony

Contoh:

Did you go out last night? (Apakah kamu pergi keluar tadi malam?)
Yes, I went to the cinema, but I didn't enjoy the film much. (Ya, saya pergi ke bioskop tapi saya tidak terlalu suka dengan filmnya).

Perhatikan disana ada pola kalimat tanya dalam kalimat lampau.
Did => Past
Last night => keterangan waktu yang menunjukan waktu tersebut sudah berlalu.
 
Went => Past
didn't  => Past
